ABOUT US

Chateau is a collaborative effort between my wife, Valerie, and myself, Sergio Reyes. We each contribute equally to our breeding program. We are both constantly trying to learn more about the breed and breeding best practices. We hope that the fact that we are both passionate about our shelties will be highly rewarding over time. Two heads are always better than one... especially if they are both moving in the same direction.

Valerie and I got into shelties while we were living and studying abroad. We dabbled in trying to show other breeds before we became enamored of this breed. Despite the difficulty associated with either flying back to the states for a dog or shipping it, we decided that american shelties are second to none... we didn't want to start out with inferior specimens.

Our first show prospect was a blue dog from Shadow Hill. Though he did not work out as well as we'd have liked, we did learn some very valuable lessons from and through him. He was instrumental in motivating us to learn more about the breed. In fact, our disappointment in the way he turned out, and what we perceived as our inability to interpret the Shetland Sheepdog Standard were two key factors in our decision to attend our first ASSA National. We were fortunate enough to be able to attend the ASSA Judge's Seminar being instructed by Linda Churchill and the Guy Mauldin.

Since that initial guidance imparted by Guy Mauldin, we've spent many hours researching more about the breed and its history. We've visited some prestigious breeders and spent many hours discussing shelties with them. All in all, I'd have to say that we have a well-balanced ideal in our minds that we will continue to strive towards. We do not want to focus on any one particular part of the sheltie at the others' expense. We value each quality according to the point scale the standard provides us.
