BISS KISMET'S MY GIRL
"Maya"
Our first dealings with Maya happened during a grooming lesson Guy Mauldin was putting on for our benefit. We were learning to trim around the shelties' feet pads. I was working on Kismet's Bling It On and Valerie was working on Maya. Valerie and I both observed that we were being trained on two very beautiful shelties... the kind novices seldom even have a chance to look at, much less learn how to trim on. We asked our mentor "what's the deal with this".
In so many words he explained to us that both of them had negative experiences in the conformation ring and would probably not ever want to show again. We thought that was a horrible shame for the two of them, but especially for Maya. You see, Maya has a once in a lifetime kind of headpiece. Her planes are nearly perfectly parallel; she has clearly defined stop, without sacrificing on leaness of backskull; her top skull doesn't recede; she has a beautiful expression, mainly because of her well-placed, almond-shaped eyes; she has beautiful depth and finish of underjaw, without causing excessive depth of head; and she has a fantastic amount of muzzle, with no veininess, just enough to have substance without losing hear feminine beauty. In addition to a beautiful headpiece, Maya a fantastic set of legs... both front and rear. She shows them off when she gaits. In all honestly, I can go on for days and days on how fabulous we think Maya is...
Anyhow, Valerie and I had been taking a couple of our pet shelties to agility class and they were doing really well. Agility is a confidence builder for dogs. We learned first hand with Penny and the teeter. She, at first, was terrified of the sudden movement. We worked with her for a few weeks, eventually helping her overcome her fear. Now, the teeter is Penny's favorite obstacle. It's almost as if she knows that she worked to overcome her fear and is now happy to face it any time and any place. We thought "Hmm, maybe agility will help Maya. A boost in confidence would help her be able to show again and finish."
Valerie talked Guy into letting us take Maya home to try out agility. Somewhere along the way, we decided that Maya should just stay and live with us. Guy seems to have decided on something of the sort as well. Needless to say, we now co-own Maya with the Mauldin's, and she now has 13 points with both majors towards her AKC championship title.
